JAI #624 - Just Add a Diorama Card

This week at Just Add Ink we're challenging you to make a diorama card. Diorama cards can be as simple as a shadow box card or more complex with many layers, but whichever style you choose it should contain a scene which is viewed through an opening.

I chose a Halloween theme for my project and kept it structurally simple (just three layers) as I wanted the hard work to go into the details and not the design. And oh boy, I had so much fun making all these quirky/spooky bits and pieces!

On the middle layer I put the tree - made up of three branch die cuts - on the left side.

And on the right side of the middle layer is the front pumpkin. The back pumpkin, together with the cat, gravestone and crow, are attached to the base layer.

The 'sky' background and sentiment lettering are coloured with mica sprays so they have a wonderful sheen to them when they catch the light. I mixed some crypt grit paste with green reinker to make lichen to cover bits of the 'tree'.

And there's more crypt paste on the gravestone to give it that lovely aged and weathered look.

Bring on Halloween, I say! I'll be interested to see if I get any trick or treaters in my new neighbourhood - though, regardless, it's a great excuse to have lollies on hand! 😂😉

• card - black mixed media heavyweight, watercolour
• Tim Holtz dies - Mr Bones, Mischevious, Pumpkin Duo, Regions Beyond
• distress mica sprays - flickering candle, jack-o-lantern, peppermint stick, hocus pocus
• distress oxide inks/sprays - antique linen, brushed corduroy, pumice stone, black soot, stormy sky, weathered wood, speckled egg
• other TH products - crypt texture paste, rustic wilderness re-inker, moon mask, iced spruce and shabby shutters distress crayons, candied apple distress paint, Idea-ology adornments - Halloween, picket fence distress ink
• other - water spritzer, heat tool, blending brushes, Dimensionals, stitched square die, white gel pen, branch die, white embossing powder, Stamparatus, Big Shot, Sidekick, paintbrush, sponge dauber, mini glue dots

Swim in Your Own Direction

For our weekly challenge this week, I gave my ladies the theme of On or Below the Sea. Today I sat down and made a diorama type card, having a ball with oxide inks and distress markers.

Materials used:

• stamps - Oddball Fish (Stamping Bella)
• card - tempting turquoise, watercolour
• distress oxide inks - mermaid lagoon, cracked pistachio, salty ocean, blueprint sketch
• distress markers - peacock feathers, spiced marmalade, squeezed lemonade, twisted citron, mustard seed, picked raspberry, dustry concord, festive berries
• other - Under the Sea dies (SU), Nesting Splat dies (Paper Rose), water spritzer, heat tool, Big Shot, blending brushes, Dimensionals

The sentiment inside will read 'Swim in your own direction'.

Garden Arch

For our next class we'll be making a couple of fancy fold cards, the first of which is this simple diorama card featuring the gorgeous arched gate die from the mini catalogue. When I first saw the preview of this catalogue, this was the stamp set and die bundle that appealed to me the most and I knew it would be 'first cab off the rank' when I ordered!

It folds flat into regular C6 size for postage, which is always handy.

Materials used:

• stamps - Grace's Garden, This Little Piggy
• card - whisper white thick
• other - Garden Gateway dies, Big Shot, Stampin' Blends, glue, blending brush, Stamparatus, mini cloud stencil (MFT)

Peace And Joy

Coming up next week is my last class of 2014 and we are making some one-off, special Christmas cards.

I am totally in love with this first colouring technique using white embossing and Blendabilities markers that is so simple yet so effective.

 Materials used:

• stamps - Ornamental Pine
• card - whisper white, mossy meadow
• other - white embossing powder, heat tool, ovals framelits, Big Shot, dimensionals, Blendabilities (old olive, crumb cake, skin tones), banner punch

Secondly is a card I cased from Debby Hughes with a few minor changes. The delicacy of the doily stamp and vellum poinsettia are just gorgeous - much nicer in real life than in the photo.

Materials used:

• stamps - Joyful Christmas, Hello Doily, Good Greetings
• card - crumb cake, white linen (non SU), vellum card
• other - dimensionals, metallic twine (silver), rhinestones, burlap ribbon

And last but by no means least, we will be making this diorama card which is an adaptation of a gorgeous card made by Linda Higgins, a fellow Aussie demo. I use a blend of white embossing powder and dazzling diamonds (about 50/50) to get a sparkle on the "snow covered" trees.

 Materials used:

• stamps - Holiday Home, Lovely as a Tree, French Foliage (retired)
• card - night of navy, silver glitter, whisper white, white glitter
• other - Holiday Home framelits, Big Shot, dimensionals, Blendabilities (night of navy, daffodil delight), white embossing powder/dazzling diamonds mix, heat tool, deco label framelits
