It's time once again to Choose Two or More items to create with for the new Just Add Ink challenge.

I actually managed to incorporate all six options on my wintery Christmas card!

It occurred to me that snowmen would not want to hang their stockings by a fire (for obvious reasons, lol), so I figured they'd put them on the tree instead. Here are Chilly and Freezy doing just that. 

All the snow aspects - the ground, snowmen and snow on the tree - were given a  liberal spray with shimmer mist and I also used sparkle texture paste for the falling snow. Here's a better look at that shimmer:

Perk Up! - Just Add Ink Challenge #762

Welcome! I couldn't resist playing along with the gorgeous inspiraton picture at Just Add Ink this week.

A warm blanket, hot drink and something pumpkin-y - muffins or soup, yuuuuuummmm! (You all know how much I love pumpkin!) Add to those a book or movie and you have the perfect way to snuggle up on these cold and dreary winter days - and we sure are getting plenty of cold and dreary at the moment, lol. 

My background is a quilt die and stencil combo which I am loving. On the coffee cup I masked with leaf die-cuts and inked over, then used some of the leaves as accents. For the pumpkins I inked over die-cuts and used some swirly vines I had left over from a previous card. Both parts of the sentiment come from a stamp set that retired years ago - just proving that when you keep things 'in case you need it some day', it can pan out! 😂😂

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow! - Just Add Ink Challenge #761

It's time for a brand new challenge at Just Add Ink and this week it's a chance to drag your Christmas supplies out of storage and make with the ho-ho-ho!

I love making Christmas cards when it's actually winter here and I can add snow elements without it looking weird - or maybe it's just because I have the perfect excuse to go to town with the splatters! And I certainly took advantage of that on my card 😁, as you can see...

It's a veritable blizzard! 😂 I really wanted to emphasise the winter aspect, lol. 

For my background I inked the inside of the embossing folder before running it through. I used puffy embossing powder for the snow on the ground - love the texture. The baubles on the tree (what do you mean, you don't bring your tree home fully decorated?) were cut from glitter card then coloured with Copics. All the other pieces - apart from the obvious white bits - were cut from coloured card and inked for shading. As usual, I cut two layers of the sentiment die and applied some white pan pastel top and bottom for a wintery look. The whole thing got a spritz of shimmer mist so has a lovely subtle sparkle to it when it catches what little sun we have at the moment. 

Getting the tree is one of my favourite Christmas memories from when my girls were younger. We'd go to the same tree farm every year and take ages choosing just the right one before chopping it down and fitting it in the boot of the car. On the way home we always stopped and bought tons of fresh fruit - strawberries, cherries, grapes, apricots, watermelon. The cherries were usually almost gone by the time we got home, lol.

It was a very chilly day when I made this, which seemed appropriate, but it did make me laugh that it followed on the heels of the tropical/summery theme I used for my last challenge cards, lol. Talk about polar opposites!

Warm Winter Friend Wishes

The current Inkspirational challenge captured my interest.

                                      

Some new wintery friends had just arrived in my mailbox and gave me the perfect opportunity to play along. They're rugged up nice and warm, just as I was while I created and the rain and wind argued outside. It's nowhere near cold enough to snow where I live but some days it sure feels like it - I must be getting old! 

I die cut first, colouring each piece individually using the matching stencils and doing two branches to layer for extra depth. The background was stencilled and sponged with white ink for a subtle, dreamy snowy scene. I'm sure you're as surprised as I am there are no white splatters, lol, but I wanted the snow to be secondary to those cute little birdie friends.

Winter Wonderland

Experiencing a white Christmas was on my bucket list for quite some time and it almost happened the year my daughter was living in Scotland ... until a little ol' global pandemic came along and then nobody was going anywhere - hardly leaving the house, let alone to the other side of the world. Ah well, such is life. Now I enjoy winter in December through card making instead, lol. 

Today's card is for three challenges which happen to dovetail together very nicely.

 

 

My Tic Tac Toe choice was the top row of ink blending, snow and tree.

I began with masking my paper for the snowy ground and blended the sunset sky (red sky at night, shepherd's delight 😉). Stamping came next, then small touches of puff embossing powder on the tree branches and at the feet of the deer before gesso splatters for falling snow. I die cut some snowflakes to tuck behind, cut my scene into three parts to mount, stamped a sentiment and called it done!

Let It Snow - Just Us Girls Challenge #750

Welcome back! It's my final week as Guest Designer at the Just Us Girls Challenge - I've had a ton of fun designing for these challenges and thank the JUGS team for the opportunity. Right now, it's stencil time!

I made a Christmas card using layering stencils as well as a standalone, and as I'm loving pink for Christmas this year, I paired a dusky pink with burgundy and white.

I started with my pink background piece, stencilling with texture paste, then I inked the snowman layering stencils and cut them using the postage collage die. Once they were attached I did gesso splatters (regular visitors will know how essential those are!). My sentiment was given an ombre ink treatment and a touch of sparkle before being mounted on vellum.

The Card Concept #204 - Winter Warmth

We've a brand new monthly challenge and inspiration pic for you at The Card Concept, this one entitled Winter Warmth.

There's certainly plenty of warmth going on around here, as February is the hottest month of summer for us. This week we've had more than one day of 37degC (98.6degF) temps so I am most definitely looking forward to the cooler days of autumn not far away (hopefully!).

The animal, trees and colours on the rug gave me an outdoorsy/nature vibe, which became the inspiration for my mixed media card. 

Curvy Girl was stamped on my background piece of watercolour card first then I sponged the clouds, sky and ground around her, and stamped her again on another piece of card. She was watercoloured using distress inks and after some fussy cutting attached to the background.

JAI #683 - Just Choose Two, Take Two

I've made a second project for the Just Add Ink choose two theme this week, picking trees and ornaments. It's a card design I've been wanting to make for some time after seeing gorgeous samples on Pinterest, and as the elements fitted right in with our 'just choose two' options, what better time?

Anyone dreaming of a white Christmas?

I cut the ornament die from masking paper and attached the outside portion to my kraft card, sponging inside with white ink and adding white artist's pastel around the edges for extra intensity. Using a white gel pen I went around the outline of the ornament then used my MISTI to stamp the image in permanent ink just where I wanted it. The gel pen was used again for the snow highlights on the cabin, trees, smoke and ground before the mask was removed. Next I set the inside part of the mask (the ornament) over my image and gave a light sponge of brown ink around it for shadowing. Once that was removed, the whole front panel got a splattering of white paint.

JAI #667 - Just Add a Sketch

Welcome to another challenge with Just Add Ink. This week we have a sketch to jet start your creativity.

Although we're at the tail end of winter now, I made my card on a cold and blustery day where it seemed very fitting, lol. Meet Chilly and Freezy!

I started with my background, blending three shades of blue oxide inks then using a snowflake stencil and volume paste. While that dried I cut and assembled my snowmen, colouring their attire using Copic markers (and discovered it's so much easier for those small, fiddly pieces!). Once it was dry I ran my background piece through the Big Shot to emboss the stitched border rather than cut it - this matches the sketch and adds a bit of visual interest without actually creating another layer. The slide dies were coloured with one of the same blue inks as the background and I added rub-ons before splattering everything with white paint to add to the snowy effect. I took some creative license and left off the sentiment strip because to be honest, I just didn't have anything that looked good there and I didn't really need it because of the writing on the slides.

JAI #666 - Just Add Inspiration

This week's Just Add Ink inspiration pic really caught my attention. I love the bright, cheerful colours and the sense of whimsy and fun.

I've used the bright pink, aqua and black on my card and tried to bring some of the happy vibe from the image to it with a funky script die. 

I started by sponging some ink on my background piece, dried it and then stencilled using snowfall grit paste - which really does look like little chunks of icy snow. 

After cutting my letters I coloured them with Zig markers then added a touch of shimmer and offset them on a black layer of the same die. The little birdies were watercoloured too. Aren't they cute with their little beanies? Lol.

The Card Concept - Winter Cocoa or Winter Snow

Welcome to another challenge with The Card Concept! Being the second challenge of the month, we're giving you a choice of two wonderful inspirational images.

I picked the Winter Snow theme and used the optional colour palette on my mixed media card.

I began with stamping the house image then coloured using distress crayons. After embossing those gorgeous pine branches I sponged over them with white ink then liberally pounced over them with white distress crayon to give it more depth of colour plus more texture. Further white crayon was added to the roof and trees then everything was splattered with white distress paint. The edges were sponged and distressed.

With the crazy weather we've been having the past couple of months, somedays it feels like winter and on the days it doesn't, it's so hot and humid I wish it were! Lol.

• card - baked brown sugar
• other TH products - picket fence distress ink and paint, pine branches 3D embossing folder, black soot oxide ink

JAI #632 - Just Choose Two

This week's Just Add Ink 'choose two' is perfect if you're making Christmas cards:

I picked deer and sparkle, although there are some trees in my background too. 

This snowy scene designer paper from some years back was perfect for embellishing. I stencilled snowfall grit paste then added some freehand around the ground too. Clear rock candy glitter was spritzed all over and I added some mica flakes for that extra touch of sparkle. For good measure, I also splattered white ink everywhere - it's not quite a snowstorm, but it's definitely snowing, lol. The deer was cut from white card and ink blended, with three layers for more dimension.

It's very difficult to photograph 'sparkle' but I've tried here and if you look closely you can see the glitter in the snowflakes (you might need to click on it to enlarge it).

Baby, It's Cold Outside - CAS on Friday Challenge #219

 

Thanks for joining me for another clean and simple challenge. WINTER is the theme for CAS on Friday challenge #219.

I couldn't resist using this adorable layering snowman die called Winston. He's so sweet! I love him in pastels too. Whole, he's too big for a CAS card so I gave him a little 'cameo' appearance, lol, and didn't use all the layers available.

I added some shimmer to the bottom layer of the scarf and the pieces that came out of the top layer made perfect snowflakes!

JAI #579 - Just Add Two

Welcome back to another Just Add Ink challenge. This week it's a 'just add two' where you pick two out of three elements to include in your design.

Yes, it's all about the shine! 

For my card I picked shimmer and glimmer - though I confess I had to look up the difference, lol. I discovered that glimmer is 'a faint light, a dim glow' while shimmer is 'a faint or veiled and tremulous gleam or shining'.  

Meet Winston the snowman - isn't he just the cutest? All my snow, including Winston, has been sprayed with white shimmer mist and has a kind of mother-of-pearl glow. 

And for my 'faint light' of glimmer, I popped three teeny tiny rhinestones on the berries in Winston's hat and used black gems for his eyes and buttons.

Snowy Treeline

This week I challenged my ladies to make a Christmas card using non-traditional colours, which pretty much means avoiding red and green! So today I sat down to have a play with inks - cos who doesn't love that? - and came up with this wintery scene.

I stamped and embossed the trees first then sprayed the background with distress spray stains. After drying and a bit of smooshing with oxide ink, I stencilled some icicle texture paste over the sky, hoping it would look like icy snow falling. It didn't turn out quite as I was hoping but never mind, it's all practise and experience!

Let's See How Long I Can Keep This Resolution...

I'm not usually one for making new year resolutions but this year I'm giving it a whirl. It's a crafting resolution, so I figure it should be easier than the regular kind, lol! Due to shipping delays etc etc (*eye roll*), many Xmas goodies I ordered didn't make it in time - arriving either far too close to Dec 25th to be used, or not arriving until well after the Big Day. Sooooo, rather than having them gathering dust, I resolved to make at least one Christmas card per month.

My January card is done and we're not even halfway through the month, so I'm doing well so far. Let's see if I can keep it up - maybe you can remind me if it's getting close to the end of the month and you haven't seen a Chrissie card up here!

For this one I've used a number of Tim Holtz products (no surprise there, methinks). The first time I tried this die I was 'not happy Jan' but I stumbled across an excellent YouTube video which made it much easier to piece together and my second go was a snap. There's still a few small errors, but hey - live and learn, right? I was making it late at night so I've given myself a pass on those.

I'm very pleased with my night sky - it came out even better than I was hoping, to be honest. First time using the splatter brush (for the stars) and boy! you get so many splatters from just one go! Pretty sure I'm hooked on that thing now.

Winter Wishes - CAS on Friday Challenge

Welcome to my very first post as a new member of the CAS on Friday design team! I'm excited to be part of this talented group and can't wait for the fun challenges over the next twelve months. I do hope some of what you see here will inspire you to take part and perhaps, like me, push yourself beyond your usual creative boundaries.

Today's challenge is #171 and the theme is WINTER.

Here in Australia we're currently experiencing the hottest and driest summer in many, many years, so making a card with a winter theme added a distinctly whimsical touch to my day, lol. I have to say the thought of snow and cold was awfully appealing! Here's my card:

Here's a close up look. I used a bamboo skewer to poke the 'snow' in all those fiddly spaces, lol.

Materials used:

• stamps - Grace's Garden (SU), Timeless Textures (SU), Hardwood (SU), Friendship Jar Holiday Fillers (PTI)
• card - whisper white, crumb cake
• other - white embossing powder, heat tool, blending brush, hills and drifts stencil (MFT), shimmer white embossing paste, mounting strips, Dimensionals, Stamparatus, sponge dauber, bamboo skewer, craft foam, watercolour pencils

I love the little bird in this set - here I've coloured it with watercolour pencils to get a soft effect for my 'robin'.
